Acuitus is an established, financially robust, midstage startup that is creating the next generation of computer-based tutoring systems. After a significant period of research and development, our focus has shifted to preparing our solutions for broad deployment. We have demonstrated exceptional results and are on the path to dramatically changing the nature of education.

Our success stems from a highly sophisticated approach that bridges many different disciplines. We are pushing the boundaries in psychology (including research in motivation, attention, and memory), artificial intelligence, natural language processing, human-computer interaction, media processing, database design, and application development.

Our team is extremely talented, bringing together people with degrees from Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, Harvard, Caltech, Moscow State University, and St. Petersburg State University, among others. We are always looking for those who can join our team and contribute to this exciting effort.

everyone has failed—until now

In 2007, the Department of Education released the first major study of computer-based tutoring systems, involving over 9,000 students across the United States. It found that none of the computer-based tutoring systems currently in use increased student performance.

We know why others have failed, and we are succeeding. Field tests show that our tutor produces a five-sigma difference in educational improvement over classes taught by the highest-rated instructor in the subject area.

One-on-one tutoring from the best human tutors is clearly superior to classroom learning. It's no accident that Socrates's best pupil was Plato, Plato's best pupil was Aristotle, and Aristotle's best pupil was Alexander the Great. As in every field—sports, writing, math, physics—there are truly exceptional teachers whose impact on students is extraordinary. The best human tutors tailor the teaching to the strengths, weaknesses, interests, and learning style of a particular student, all while focusing on deep, conceptual learning rather than merely on memorization of facts.

Unfortunately, we have had to settle for classroom learning because there are simply not enough exceptional tutors around to teach every student. Our computer-based tutoring systems are designed to overcome this barrier by replicating the best human tutors, thereby making this form of learning available to every student.
